Bench-Top Shakers

Points to consider when buying a bench-top shaker:
1. What will be cultured using the shaker?
An orbital shaker mechanism provides better mixing and aeration for both microbial and cell cultures. However, the speed will vary not just with the load but also wth the characteristics of the organism. Shear-sensitive mammalian cells will need slower speeds than rapidly growing microbial cultures.
Microorgansism | Shaking speeds |
Bacteria | 100 – 400 min–1 |
Fungi | 250 min–1 |
Yeast | 200 – 250 min–1 |
Cell cultures |
Shaking speeds |
Mammalian cells | 40 – 120 min–1 |
insect cells | 100 – 140 min–1 |
Plant cells | 100 – 200 min–1 |
2. What type, quantity and size of culture vessels do I need?
This basic information is essential for ordering a suitable tray. Universal sticky mats allows for direct contact or sticking a suitable holder in place.
3. What are the height and weight of my proposed load?
High, heavy loads will lead to reduced shaker speeds and must be distributed evenly over the tray to avoid uneven loads that may cause vibrations or limit the performance of the shaker. The filling volume of individual vessels will largely determine the overall height and weight of the load. Keep in mind that a lower filling volume in a shake flask (10-15 % rather than 20-25 %) will greatly increase the surface area to volume ratio for improved gas transfer.
4. Will the shaker be placed in an incubator?
Minimal heat generation and the quality of lubrication of the bearings will play a part in this case. Also, how easy is it to access the controling pad to adjust speed or time? An external operating panel outside the incubator is a clear advantage.
5. Does the design of the shaker help you with your daily tasks?
A clear display which can be seen across a laboratory and simple controls don’t sound like a big thing, but they will save time and make life easier every day. In addition, housings made from composite materials are non-corrosive and can be cleaned/disinfected easily.
6. Do you have the security of a long warranty and service support?
Our shakers are designed to be robust and have a two-year warranty as standard. Service support is provided by expert technicians specifically trained on our equipment.
