Opened in 2003, the rain forest in the middle of Zurich zoo covers an area of some 11,000 m2 and allows visitors to explore a miniature Madagascan ecosystem and discover more than 300 plant and animal species. A project unique throughout Europe has attracted visitors from all over the world to Switzerland since summer 2003. The Masoala rain forest has been created at the heart of Zurich zoo. There visitors can experience in close-up a piece of Madagascar on 11’000 m2 and discover over 300 different plant species and many animals. The light and airy covering of the modern Ecosystem hall and a constant humidity of more than 80% create ideal conditions for the lives of animals and plants. The Masoala hall offers young and old a unique natural experience. At the same time, visitors make a direct contribution to the protection of the rain forest on Madagascar through their visit. The zoo uses a part of the proceeds to support a nature protection project that is providing long-term support for the national park on Madagascar.Adoption: Aldabra giant turtle
Because our hearts echo our thoughts and feelings, we support the Masoala rain forest-project at Zurich zoo with an animal adoption scheme. Our protégé, the Aldabra giant turtle, has a shell of up to 123 cm and a maximum weight of 200 kg; it is the largest turtle in the world. Its natural habitat lies in the Aldabra atoll in the Indian Ocean.
