Bioprocess Control

Bioprocess control begins with the quality and flexibility of the local controller. This has to provide accurate and reliable measurement, control and communication with supervisory software.

INFORS HT offers two innovative solutions in the form of the rotary digital controller and a colour touch screen controller. The approach to the HMI (Human Machine Interface) is much the same for either unit i.e. common functions grouped together in tabbed sections, great flexibility for easily adding new sensors, controllers etc. and simple control of access to higher level control functions e.g. PID loops.

Both systems are based on industry standard controllers and communicate using recognised protocols such as modbus and OPC. This provides great flexibility in linking INFORS HT controllers to a wide range of peripherals and high level supervisory software.

Iris bioprocess control software is the link between all INFORS HT bioreactors, providing flexible options for data logging, graphing and especially control. This is a mature, stable programme for mission-critical applications with over two decades of use continuous improvement. As Iris is fully Windows compliant, it is already familiar to users of other applications. Comprehensive help and the use of wizards combined with many examples provided in the hard-copy operating manual to make for a short learning curve and optimum productivity.

Parameters can be altered according to time, events or any combination of the two e.g. automated pump control. Offline and calculated data can be added. Features such as a user action log provide the required information for compliance with current regulatory approval of processes e.g. for the Code of Federal Regulations Part 11 (21 CFR Part 11).

What can be done with Iris:

  • Full data logging of measured, off-line, calculated and other process variables
  • Comprehensive graphing and annotation of historical data for comparison etc.
  • Time based control using a simple user interface
  • Event based control, including ramps and multiple options to allow for changes in the bioprocess
  • Follow file to simplify automation of the management of process variables for both production or research
  • Exponential feed strategies with many variations
  • Calculation and use of a range of biological variables such as Respiratory Quotient (RQ)
  • Links to external programmes and devices via OLE, OPC and RS232
  • Export of data
