Multiple, parallele Kultur
This field of multiple, parallel culture is one of the most innovative and rapidly developing in biotechnology. INFORS HT was the first with a multiple, parallel bioreactor array offering small volumes (< 500 mL), statistical validity (4 replicates plus positive and negative controls) with fully independent control of all parameters, then a dedicated incubator shaker for processing of large numbers of microtitre plates. Options for larger volumes (1 - 10 L) are available from Multifors to the Labfors range of bench-scale bioreactors. All these options are equally applicable to both microbial and cell cultures. The INFORS HT difference is visible in our design of multiple, parallel bioreactor systems with easy handling of pumps, calibration of sensors and moving vessels to and from the autoclave. Parallel systems can be split up and reformed as required. The working volumes chosen allow for multiple sampling and this allows the design to be a true bioreactor in miniature. The incubator shakers allow maximum capacity, a choice of throw for different requirements and several options for minimisation of liquid loss due to evaporation. Add the stacking capabilities of Mulitron 2 and the number of replicates possible in a small footprint is remarkable.
What can multiple, parallel systems be used for:
- Rapid assays requiring statistical validity and minimum vessel-to-vessel variation
- Clone selection (both in microtitre plates and small bioreactors)
- Media and process optimisation
- Small-scale continuous culture, where media costs may be a critical factor
- Scale-down studies where results from the small scale directly influence much larger production processes
- Collection of process validation data using Process Analytical Technology (PAT)

Choosing multiple parallel bioreactors for PAT:
The Process Analytic Technology (PAT) initiative advocated by the Food & Drug Administration agency in the USA is intended to champion the need to collect more data on biological and pharmaceutical production processes at an earlier stage of development. The use of small-scale, multiple parallel bioreactor arrays is a very useful tool for screening, optimisation, media development or toxicity testing bioprocesses. INFORS HT is the leading expert in this area and can offer some practical advice and multiple cell vessel systems from 500 mL to 10 L scale volumes, which can be controlled parallel, proving the capability to efficiently generate validated data very rapidly.
